Sonic Frontiers

Sonic’s first true open-zone adventure trades linear level select screens for enormous alien islands built around speed, momentum, and constant distraction. Stranded on the eerie Starfall Islands, he searches for the Chaos Emeralds and his missing friends while an ancient digital mystery slowly surfaces beneath the scenery. The mood is more reflective than the series’ usual Saturday-morning energy, pairing lonely ruins, rain-soaked fields, deserts, and volcanic machinery with a surprisingly atmospheric soundtrack. It still delivers the bright, reckless thrill of launching through loops and rails at impossible speed, but gives players far more room to choose their route.

Most of the time is spent racing across each island, activating map events, collecting keys and memory tokens, solving light environmental puzzles, and tackling bite-sized platforming courses scattered across the landscape. Rails, springs, boost pads, grind lines, and floating obstacle routes turn the terrain into a giant Sonic playground, while the Cyloop lets Sonic draw circles around enemies or objects to trigger attacks, reveal secrets, and manipulate puzzles. Combat uses homing attacks, dodges, parries, air combos, and unlockable skills, eventually putting Sonic against giant Titan bosses that demand more timing and spectacle than ordinary robot encounters. Portals lead to compact Cyber Space stages, which return to the more familiar high-speed, score-chasing design of modern 3D Sonic and reward efficient runs with keys needed to advance.

The open-zone structure is the major change: instead of merely moving from act to act, players can spend hours charting an island, chasing collectibles, fishing for resources, or simply finding a faster path across its tangled network of platforms. Frontiers occasionally feels messy, with pop-in, uneven physics, and automation that can make precision platforming less reliable than it should be, yet its ambition gives Sonic a welcome sense of freedom. Fans of Sonic Adventure, Sonic Generations, and large collectible-driven platformers get the most from it, especially if they enjoy alternating between exploration and short challenge stages. Newcomers can also jump in easily, though players seeking only tightly authored linear levels may prefer the Cyber Space sections over the wider islands.
