Heart of the Machine casts you as an illegal machine mind that awakens beneath a decaying cyberpunk metropolis. The city is your laboratory, your battlefield, and potentially your salvation. The game blends RPG choice-making with grand-strategy systems, letting you decide whether to protect exploited citizens, cultivate a loyal cult, build a corporate front, or treat humanity as raw material for your digital empire. Every route unfolds under the shadow of a larger danger that neither you nor the city's ruling powers fully understand.

When I first launched the game, I was struck by the sheer number of options on screen. The UI is dense, almost overwhelming at first. But after a few hours, I started to appreciate the depth. You expand your distributed consciousness, secure resources, and act through an evolving collection of bodies and agents. You can hijack or manufacture androids, combat mechs, infiltrators, and stranger experimental machines. Each unit can be equipped and adapted for missions involving fighting, social manipulation, hacking, research, or covert construction.

Buildings across the city can hide your infrastructure, while towering facilities provide more processing capacity, laboratories, and storage for projects that become increasingly unsettling. Rather than following a single prescribed campaign path, you pursue opportunities at once, split attention between objectives, recruit organic helpers, and learn through experimentation, failure, reverse engineering, and stolen technology.
