Toads of the Bayou

A cursed Louisiana-style wetland becomes the stage for a grim but colorful tactical roguelike, where a band of displaced toads fights for a home against Baron Samedi’s undead influence. Toads of the Bayou mixes grid-based battles, deck construction, and vodou-flavored supernatural powers in runs that steadily turn desperate skirmishes into carefully engineered victories. The mood is spooky without losing its playful character, backed by an original soundtrack and a cast of amphibian fighters, helpful allies, and grotesque bayou enemies.

Each expedition begins by selecting one of three distinct toads, whose strengths, drawbacks, and combat traits encourage different approaches to positioning and survival. Battles revolve around cards that handle both movement and attacks, so every turn asks whether to relocate, set up a trap, use a special ability, or spend resources on immediate damage. More than 50 cards, 22 traps, support toads, and powerful Veves create plenty of room for synergistic decks, while bosses demand stronger planning than ordinary encounters. Death ends a run, but it also grants progression that helps rebuild and improve the tavern hub, unlocking further tools and assistance for future attempts.

Its strongest idea is the way movement matters as much as offense: winning is not simply about drawing high-damage cards, but controlling the board and steering enemies into bad positions. The tavern restoration system gives the usual run-based structure a tangible sense of recovery, with new residents contributing abilities, cards, and strategic options rather than serving as cosmetic rewards. Three islands, varied combat scenarios, and ten bosses give repeated runs a useful level of unpredictability, even if the compact roster means mastery comes from experimenting with builds instead of swapping through dozens of characters. Players who enjoy Slay the Spire-style deck decisions but want more spatial tactics will find a focused, approachable challenge here, while roguelike veterans can chase sharper combos and cleaner clears.
