Players take control of AMS agents James Taylor or Gary Stewart as they investigate an infestation with disturbing links to the earlier Curien Mansion disaster. The mood is knowingly pulpy rather than genuinely terrifying, built around mutant monsters, melodramatic voice work, and the constant pressure of enemies rushing the screen.

Movement follows a fixed cinematic path, so the challenge lies in aiming quickly, managing reloads, prioritizing targets, and reacting before enemies land a hit. Shots can save civilians, reveal alternate routes, or change the direction of the campaign, giving the short arcade structure more variety than a simple score chase. Branching stages and multiple endings encourage repeat runs, while enemies and bosses demand memorization as much as reflexes on tougher settings. Local co-op lets two players blast through the campaign together, and separate Boss Mode and Training Mode provide focused ways to chase faster clears or sharpen weak points.

The remake’s biggest strength is its commitment to the original’s straightforward light-gun design: it wastes little time on upgrades, open-world detours, or elaborate systems when a screen full of undead needs clearing. Modernized presentation gives its old environments a fresh coat of paint, while the original soundtrack remains available for players who prefer the classic arcade atmosphere. Compared with modern rail shooters, it feels deliberately old-school, closer to an interactive horror cabinet than a deep action adventure, and its brevity suits quick sessions particularly well.
