Game Overview

A crippled Cold War submarine rests on the ocean floor, trapping the surviving crew inside a nightmare of drowned ruins, alien relics, and things that should not exist. Stirring Abyss is a turn-based tactical RPG built around Lovecraftian dread rather than jump scares, using its deep-sea setting to create constant pressure and isolation. You command the crew of the USS Salem after a classified mission goes catastrophically wrong, searching the surrounding abyss for repairs, answers, and a route back to the surface. The mood stays deliberately bleak: every expedition feels like a calculated risk taken far from safety.

Missions unfold on grid-based maps where positioning, cover, line of sight, ammunition, and each operative’s specialized abilities matter as much as raw firepower. Crew members develop through RPG-style upgrades, gaining distinct combat roles and increasingly strange powers as exposure to the abyss changes them. Between deployments, you manage the damaged submarine, research recovered materials, craft equipment, heal injuries, and decide which scarce resources are worth spending before pushing farther into the ruins. Combat rewards patience and planning, but the unknown enemies, environmental hazards, and permanent consequences for careless decisions keep tension high throughout the campaign.

Its strongest feature is the way tactical systems support the setting: an apparently sensible upgrade or desperate detour can gradually pull the crew toward mutation, instability, and occult knowledge. The hand-drawn 2D presentation gives the underwater caverns and ruined cities a suitably eerie, old-school atmosphere, while the story steadily reveals why the Salem’s mission matters. Fans of XCOM’s squad management, Darkest Dungeon’s oppressive mood, or classic cosmic horror will find a focused and inventive campaign here. Newcomers can learn its readable turn-based fundamentals, though strategy veterans get the most from experimenting with builds, resource management, and difficult tactical choices.
