Stellar Tactics (GOG)

A mercenary crew, a battered ship, and a staggering frontier of star systems form the foundation of Stellar Tactics, a deliberately old-school science-fiction RPG with far more interest in player freedom than cinematic hand-holding. Its universe mixes ruined colonies, alien remnants, corporate trade routes, pirates, and the scars of long-running wars into a setting that feels built for wandering. The tone lands somewhere between the tactical tension of classic squad RPGs and the open-ended spacefaring ambition of a sandbox. Following the central narrative is an option, but the real appeal lies in deciding what kind of captain and commander your crew becomes.

On planets, the action shifts to turn-based, squad-level combat where positioning, cover, weapon range, abilities, and carefully developed specialists matter. Characters use a classless advancement system, letting players shape recruits into focused snipers, heavy weapon experts, hackers, medics, or versatile all-rounders through a large perk selection. Away from the battlefield, you outfit both people and vessels with weapons, armor, modules, upgrades, crafted components, and Nano-Tech improvements, then take contracts, hunt bounties, raid locations, or investigate points revealed by scanning worlds. Space operations add mining, refining, trading, drone-based resource collection, and ship-to-ship encounters where hostile craft can be crippled, boarded, claimed, and sold.

What separates Stellar Tactics from more guided RPGs is its sheer willingness to support a long-term career across a procedural galaxy: a combat vessel, mining operation, trading network, or scavenger fleet can all bankroll the same campaign. Ship choice matters, with hulls suited to hauling, combat, exploration, and resource work, while market information and deployed beacons reward players who enjoy planning profitable routes. The enormous universe can feel less authored than a tightly scripted RPG, but its scale gives exploration and self-directed progression real weight. Fans of XCOM-style tactical fights, Star Traders: Frontiers, and older computer RPGs will find plenty to enjoy, especially if they value systems-heavy freedom over polish and constant narrative spectacle.
