Shantae and the Seven Sirens

A bright island vacation turns into a sprawling rescue mission when Shantae’s fellow Half-Genies vanish beneath the waves. Shantae and the Seven Sirens is a colorful Metroidvania that trades the series’ usual desert backdrops for tropical villages, coral caverns, flooded ruins, and an enormous submerged city. Its Saturday-morning-cartoon energy keeps the mood playful, but the mystery surrounding the missing genies and the monstrous Sirens gives the adventure real momentum. Hand-drawn animation, expressive character portraits, and a bouncy soundtrack make every new region feel inviting even when danger is close.

Shantae fights with her trademark hair-whip attacks, spells, consumable items, and dance magic, but the major progression system comes from Fusion Magic. New transformations let her swim through narrow currents, break obstacles, climb surfaces, and access previously unreachable sections, gradually opening a densely interconnected map in classic Metroidvania fashion. Exploration involves talking to townsfolk, uncovering side routes, collecting upgrades, defeating enemies, and tackling a generous number of labyrinths packed with traps, switches, and boss encounters. Monster Cards add another layer of customization by granting passive bonuses, allowing players to tune Shantae toward stronger attacks, improved defense, better resource recovery, or more specialized builds.

The game stands out through its smooth pacing and unusually accessible approach to the genre: its world is large, but clear map markers and frequent fast-travel points reduce the aimless backtracking that can frustrate newcomers. Bosses demand attention to patterns without reaching the punishing intensity of tougher action-platformers, while optional collectibles and card combinations give series veterans reasons to search every corner. Familiar faces including Risky Boots, Sky, Bolo, and Rottytops bring the expected humor, while the new Half-Genies and Sirens keep the story from feeling like a nostalgia tour. Fans of Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap, Monster Boy, and lighter Metroid-style adventures find a polished, cheerful platformer here, especially if they value exploration and personality over brutal difficulty.
