Game Overview

The Spanish Civil War becomes a demanding operational contest where politics, logistics, and battlefield momentum matter as much as raw numbers. SGS Spain at War covers the conflict from the July 1936 uprising through the final Republican collapse in spring 1939, using weekly turns across the whole peninsula. Nationalist commanders race to transport the hardened Army of Africa, seize major urban centers, and turn early gains into a decisive surrender, while Republican players fight a far more precarious delaying action. The tone is sober, detailed, and unapologetically focused on the difficult military realities of a divided country at war.

Each turn revolves around moving formations, securing vital territory, managing supply and replacements, and deciding where limited industrial capacity has the greatest impact. Republican militias gradually develop into a more capable Popular Army, whereas the Nationalists lean on veteran regulars and foreign-backed air power to force breakthroughs before their opponent stabilizes. Units cannot simply return forever after costly fighting; elite troops and naval losses demand careful handling, making reckless offensives genuinely expensive. Event cards add uncertainty through reinforcements, diplomacy, internal politics, public support, economic shifts, and combat effects, so a strong plan still needs room for sudden reversals.

Historical specificity is the main attraction: regional forces, anarchist militias, International Brigades, warships, armored vehicles, and famous aircraft all give the map a strong sense of place without reducing the conflict to generic counters. A full campaign supports a lengthy war of maneuver, while a shorter 1939 holdout scenario offers a tighter challenge and alternate-history options invite experimentation. The Republican side presents the steeper learning curve, particularly for players who must survive the opening months with disorganized forces and scarce resources. Fans of turn-based operational wargames such as Unity of Command or the broader Strategic Command style, especially those who value historical research over flashy presentation, find a focused and rewarding campaign here.
