Root adapts Cole Wehrle’s acclaimed asymmetric board game into a polished digital strategy experience for two to four players. Every faction pursues victory points, but each one interprets war, territory, and power through entirely different rules. The result feels less like a traditional board game and more like four radically different strategy games colliding on the same forest map.

Matches revolve around claiming clearings, fighting for control, constructing buildings, spreading influence, and deciding when to cooperate or betray an opponent. The Marquise de Cat expands through workshops and recruiters, the Eyrie Dynasties must follow an increasingly demanding programmed decree, the Woodland Alliance quietly plants sympathy before sparking revolt, and the Vagabond roams independently, completing quests and managing relationships. Combat uses dice and limited hands of cards, so even a dominant army must account for ambushes, supply lines, and the cost of overextending. Digital features such as automated setup, rules enforcement, AI opponents, tutorials, pass-and-play, and online multiplayer make its dense tabletop systems far easier to learn and manage than they are around a physical table.

What makes Root exceptional is its asymmetry: knowing how to win with one faction does not automatically teach you how to stop another. Its hand-drawn animal art and storybook presentation soften a game that is often cutthroat, political, and surprisingly punishing of mistakes. Map layouts, faction combinations, shifting alliances, and optional expansions give repeated matches a different tactical character, especially with a regular group willing to learn the meta.
