As the child of Haven’s feared ruler, you are sent into Rokaj, a harsh frontier where local warlords, rebellious subjects, and opportunistic killers all test the empire’s weakening hold. Your mother’s illness turns a political assignment into a succession crisis, and every alliance or act of intimidation can reshape the fate of the province. The tone is serious but not relentlessly grim, with sharp writing and morally uncomfortable decisions carrying as much weight as a well-planned battle.

Travel across a large, freely approached region of towns, wilderness, enemy strongholds, and puzzle-filled dungeons, taking on more than a hundred quests at your own pace. Combat uses deliberate turn-based tactics: position a party of adventurers, manage cooldowns and resources, and rebuild characters around a broad selection of skills when new threats demand different answers. Between expeditions, you claim and develop forts, choosing structures and upgrades that provide practical combat advantages while also affecting how your rule is perceived. Diplomacy, bribes, threats, and direct force all offer ways to handle troublesome vassals, though the consequences are rarely identical.

Spiderweb Software’s greatest strength remains its dense, reactive world design, and Rokaj feels like a real occupied territory rather than a checklist of fantasy attractions. The fortress system gives territorial control a satisfying strategic purpose, while the flexible party building makes experimentation viable without forcing a restart. Veterans of Avernum or Geneforge will recognize the studio’s emphasis on tactical depth, extensive text, and meaningful player agency, but no familiarity with the earlier Queen’s Wish is required. Players who enjoy Baldur’s Gate-style choices filtered through classic isometric, turn-based RPG design will find a substantial campaign here, with the included Judgment expansion providing a proper closing chapter.
