Orangeblood

New Koza turns an alternate-history Okinawan artificial island into a grimy, neon-lit playground for gunfights, shady bars, rooftop hangouts, and criminal turf wars. Orangeblood is a compact Japanese-style RPG with a deliberately rough 1990s attitude, following four heavily armed young women who treat gangsters, robots, and demons as target practice. Its mood balances cute character art with dirty concrete, industrial decay, and casual violence, while a hip-hop-heavy soundtrack gives every alley and backroom confrontation extra swagger. The setting feels less like a traditional fantasy quest and more like a late-night urban crime comic filtered through retro console hardware.

Combat uses turn-based party battles, but firearms replace the usual swords and magic. Players assemble a squad, choose targets and tactics, manage ammunition, and make use of weapons with dramatically different strengths, from rapid-fire guns to devastating shotguns. New equipment constantly enters the loop through shops and random drops, encouraging experimentation with powerful guns, protective gear, and character builds rather than relying on one fixed loadout. Encounters can be punishing when enemies focus fire or arrive in large numbers, so careful preparation and knowing when to spend resources matters more than simply attacking every turn.

What separates Orangeblood from other indie RPGs is its commitment to a specific aesthetic: chunky pixel visuals, lo-fi menus, Japanese street fashion, tropical city scenery, and underground hip-hop all reinforce its unusual identity. The story and humor are intentionally irreverent, and the cast’s hard-edged attitude will appeal more to players who enjoy style, atmosphere, and oddball personalities than solemn drama. Its randomized weapon system adds replay value, although the adventure remains focused and relatively concise rather than becoming an endless loot grind. Fans of retro RPG structure, modern urban fantasy, and games such as Mother 3 or early Shin Megami Tensei with a more gun-crazy, punkish edge should find plenty to like, while newcomers should be ready for some sharp difficulty spikes.
