Kyoto’s temples, shopping streets, and school corridors become the backdrop for a supernatural action RPG where ordinary student life sits beside monster-filled labyrinths. Rei Kamiya arrives at Hirasaka Academy carrying the power to battle creatures in Xanadu, a dangerous otherworld concealed beneath the surface of Japan’s new capital. Alongside fellow “eligibles,” he investigates the mysteries connecting the city and the labyrinth while balancing classes, friendships, and escalating threats. The mood blends colorful modern fantasy with the familiar rhythm of a school-life adventure, rather than leaning fully into horror or grim apocalypse.

Most of the action revolves around pushing deeper into Xanadu, developing Rei’s Soul-Device, and adapting to a combat system that switches perspectives. Labyrinth exploration uses a side-scrolling 2D format, emphasizing platforming, route-finding, and encounters across broad underground areas; designated gates then shift the action into enclosed 3D battle spaces. In those arenas, players use skills, positioning, technical attacks, and Guardian Cards that add elemental effects such as fire or ice while opening access to specialized ranged options. Progression comes from points earned both during expeditions and through school activities, so attending class and choosing action cards meaningfully improves stats, relationships, and available abilities.

Its most appealing idea is the deliberate overlap between dungeon crawling and a more relaxed Kyoto routine. After classes, Rei can visit landmarks, gather rumors, shop, share meals with classmates, and pursue optional chats or quests that build out the cast instead of treating them as combat tools. Guardian customization and the 2D-to-3D transition give the fighting a structure unlike standard anime action RPGs, while the academy schedule adds a Persona-like social layer without abandoning real-time combat. Fans of Falcom-style character-driven adventures, especially Tokyo Xanadu and Ys, should find plenty to like, while newcomers get a more approachable premise built around clear daily routines and steadily expanding systems.
