A ruined planet becomes a strangely peaceful labyrinth in this exploratory platformer from Nifflas. Five centuries after humanity abandons the surface following a catastrophic war, sprites, fairies, and other survivors build their lives beneath the earth, surrounded by forgotten machinery and unanswered questions. You follow Mi, a mute sprite whose quiet journey turns urgent when the six Bells of Fate must be rung before a planetary disaster begins. The mood shifts gracefully between lonely, melancholy ruins, playful oddities, and surprisingly philosophical encounters.

Movement is the real focus: Mi runs, jumps, climbs, swings from environmental anchors, bounces across hazards, and eventually changes into a ball to reach new routes. Rather than demanding constant combat, the game rewards curiosity, careful navigation, and learning how each ability opens previously inaccessible chambers. Its enormous connected map contains more than 1,800 screens, with story quests, optional detours, strange inhabitants, and environmental puzzles scattered throughout the underground. Progression feels closer to a Metroidvania than a conventional action game, although the emphasis remains on platforming freedom and exploration rather than fighting or loot.

What stands out is the sheer sense of place. Every region has its own visual identity and ambient soundscape, from natural caverns and glowing forests to industrial remnants of the old world, making the enormous map feel hand-crafted rather than repetitive. The platforming can be demanding in isolated sections, but the generally unhurried pace lets players absorb the world without being constantly punished. Fans of Knytt Stories, VVVVVV, Cave Story, or quieter exploration-led indies will find a lot to admire here, especially if they value atmosphere over combat. Knytt Underground suits newcomers willing to be patient with its sprawling map, while genre veterans can enjoy uncovering its many hidden paths and unusual narrative turns.
