An elderly monarch recounts the adventures that turn a wide-eyed young Graham into the ruler of Daventry, framing each episode as a story shared with his granddaughter Gwendolyn. This episodic revival of the classic adventure series trades the old point-and-click presentation for a colorful 3D fairy-tale world full of talking mirrors, goblins, knights, dragons, and wonderfully absurd danger. Its tone balances genuine warmth and nostalgia with goofy comedy, sharp wordplay, and a willingness to let Graham meet spectacularly silly deaths. Across five chapters, the tale gradually becomes more personal, giving its fairy-tale jokes a surprising emotional weight.

Gameplay centers on roaming compact storybook environments, talking to eccentric characters, collecting useful objects, and working out how each location’s problems fit together. Puzzles usually support several valid solutions rather than demanding one obscure item combination, so players can approach challenges through courage, cleverness, or kindness. Those broad choices influence dialogue, relationships, contests, and later callbacks, even when the main plot continues along a defined route. Each chapter introduces a different type of trial, from tournament challenges and escape sequences to social deduction and scavenger-style problem solving, while quick reactions occasionally matter during action scenes.

Daventry is the real star: a bright, animated world that looks like a lavish children’s book but never treats its audience as children. Christopher Lloyd’s performance as Graham lends the framing scenes real gravitas, while the younger cast gives every oddball companion a distinct personality. Veterans of Sierra’s original King’s Quest games will appreciate the references, familiar names, and delightfully cruel failure screens, but no knowledge of the earlier adventures is required. Players who enjoy Telltale-style narrative adventures, Monkey Island humor, or gentler puzzle games with strong characters find plenty to like, especially if they value experimentation over pixel-perfect inventory hunting.
