Exanima

Exanima is not your typical click-to-attack RPG. The combat system is built on physical simulation: weapons have weight, bodies have momentum, and armor protects specific locations. When you swing a sword, you have to consider reach, timing, and balance. I found myself fumbling initially, but after a few hours, the mechanics started to click. The game expects you to learn through failure, and it rewards patience and deliberate movement. The story unfolds through environmental clues, documents, and conversations, so exploration is key. The main dungeon is a labyrinth of corridors, locked doors, and abandoned chambers, each hinting at a tragic past.

The separate arena mode is a godsend for practicing combat without risking your campaign progress. I spent a good chunk of time there testing different weapon types and learning how to handle opponents who stumble, recover, and exploit openings. The dynamic lighting and angular isometric visuals create a tangible world where shadows hide dangers. The mood is oppressive, and even a quiet room can become deadly in seconds.
