Turn-based battles retain the series’ familiar formation-based combat, demanding careful use of ranks, positioning, damage types, resistances, and cooldowns. The revised token system clearly shows temporary advantages and vulnerabilities—such as Dodge, Block, Vulnerable, or Combo—making each skill choice more readable while preserving plenty of tactical depth. Between fights, players steer their stagecoach along branching routes, choose encounters, collect supplies, face roadside threats, and decide which risks are worth taking for a stronger build. Stress remains as dangerous as enemy attacks, because heroes develop relationships that can create powerful synergies or trigger arguments, selfish behavior, and disastrous meltdowns; Inn stops offer a vital chance to heal bodies, calm minds, and manage the group.

Its strongest change is the run-based structure, which makes defeat sting without erasing all progress: failed expeditions still yield resources for lasting upgrades, new options, and more flexible future attempts. Each hero has unlockable skills, distinct paths that reshape their role, and a personal backstory to uncover, encouraging experimentation beyond the obvious party compositions. Painterly 3D visuals, dramatic narration, and grotesque enemy design give the journey a theatrical gothic-horror identity few RPGs match. Fans of Slay the Spire, roguelike planning, or the first Darkest Dungeon should feel at home, though newcomers need patience for punishing runs and the constant pressure of keeping a fragile team functional.
