Netherveil City runs on neon glare, decaying concrete, and the certainty that something terrible is hiding behind every alleyway. Celestial Return is a grim narrative-driven indie detective adventure that follows Howard, a worn-down investigator pursuing a wave of unsettling deaths while his own grip on reality frays. His strangest companion is a verbose rose with a mind of its own, while a stash of purloined dice becomes the closest thing he has to security. The mood is oppressive, violent, and defiantly hopeless, but its central idea is not surrender—it is finding a reason to resist when the system already considers you disposable.

Investigations send Howard through the city’s diseased districts, where he questions people, probes crimes, and even seeks testimony from the deceased. Conversations are not simply routes to the next clue: choices influence Howard’s developing identity, with intellect, morality, and outright recklessness opening or closing different responses and story directions. Dice function as a precious resource as well as a risk mechanic, forcing players to decide when a roll is worth the possible loss and when it is smarter to preserve what little leverage remains. That push-and-pull gives each dialogue encounter a survival-game tension, especially when a reckless decision can reshape both the detective and the case.

Its strongest calling card is the presentation, which combines sharply detailed manga-inspired imagery with the harsher shadows and weight of Western comic art. Visual touchstones such as Akira, Berserk, Blame!, and Biomega help explain the industrial body-horror atmosphere, though the game’s noir investigation angle gives the setting its own identity. A soundtrack blending smoky jazz, futuristic electronic music, and abrasive metal reinforces the sense that Netherveil is collapsing from the inside out. Players who enjoy choice-heavy mysteries, bleak cyberpunk fiction, and psychologically punishing role-playing systems should find plenty to latch onto, while anyone wanting a cheerful detective story or clean heroic power fantasy should look elsewhere.
